Eddie Lives Online: Hashing out my idea for Nanowrimo

by meta4man on October 19, 2008

Since first thinking about it, the whole Eddie and the Cruisers idea has kept bouncing around in my head. Kinda like they used to, and I like it. Among other things, I am having an inner discussion about my reservations on using, and devoting time to a character that was created by somebody else. I’ve always kind of been annoyed by those guys writing whole novels in other universe’s, like Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. , but I don’t really look at it like that.

  • It is strictly a Nanowrimo project, one month and I can just set it aside again if I choose.
  • Thanks to Hollywood minimalism, the character is barely defined, open to whatever stamp I want to put on him, short of complete revisionist history. Yes, I’ve considered that I could very simply create my own and add my own history, but using Eddie appeals to me for some reason. Of course, the minute anyone squawks about a copyright, I will do just that. It’s not like it’s an original character.
  • There is a wealth of changes to show affecting Eddie since the last movie, where the onset of MTV was bringing him to the forefront.

Somehow, using someone else’s character to start has given me a kick start that hasn’t been there lately to move forward with the stories of my own characters. As the writing process works with me, I am starting to see Eddie, who after another brief moment in the spotlight, slipped back away into his own world, not hiding so much as refusing to sustain the PR that it takes to keep a celebrity not committing crimes or acting a fool to keep going.

He’s not in the music industry anymore but maybe he has an archive of songs he has written over the years, since his last album. The lost album and recordings angle is seriously worn out from the first two movies though, so I don’t plan on making that some big deal. There is also no reason to have sme reporter come around for a “Where are they Now” segment, did that in the first movie, or recruit a new band and whip them into shape, second movie.

As a start, I think I will find Eddie getting old, playing guitar less and less, but having something make him begin to write and change and share his current life. Let’s just say that maybe he starts writing in his blog more often.
